Selection Criteria
I look first at the subscription model itself. The business should already operate on a recurring revenue basis — or have a clear, credible path to one — with a product that customers willingly renew rather than tolerate. SaaS, digital media, membership platforms, marketplaces with subscription layers, and hybrid digital-physical models all qualify. Pure transactional businesses without recurring economics typically do not.
Second, I focus on operator-level fit. The most valuable thing I bring is two decades of pattern recognition across pricing architecture, churn mechanics, payment processing, and scaling teams. So I prioritise businesses where these levers are the dominant constraints on growth — the situations where an experienced operator alongside the founder genuinely changes the trajectory rather than simply ratifying decisions already being made.
Third, I weigh the founder relationship. I'm a hands-on investor, which means I work best with founders who actively want a co-pilot in the room — someone who'll challenge assumptions, share operating data candidly, and roll up their sleeves on the unglamorous parts of subscription mechanics. That collaborative posture matters far more to me than any specific stage, geography, or revenue threshold.
